Chelsea Middle School FCCLA wins $500

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Sales efforts of students in Chelsea Middle School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter earned the group $500 from the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation.

In the fall, students participated in a special fundraiser, selling 93 copies of the Farming Feeds Alabama cookbook.

Alabama Farmers Federation District 6 Director Phillip Hunter recently presented the prize money to chapter adviser Leslee Hunter and her students for selling more than other participating schools.

“We loved this fundraiser,” Hunter said. “The cookbook was so beautiful, when people saw it in person, they had to have it. Last year was my first year teaching and serving as FCCLA adviser. With no money in the FCCLA account, we had to start from scratch. After this fundraiser, we now have over $1,500 in the bank.”

AFAF is the charitable arm of the Federation, the state’s largest farming organization with more than 357,000 members.

“This money will allow us to serve our community in many different ways,” Hunter said. “Our latest community service project was donating to the Shelby County Humane Society. Students delivered their homemade dog treats to the shelter. We would not have been able to afford the supplies for this project without the fundraiser. We are grateful for the Ag Foundation and its support of Alabama schools.”

AFAF also presented prizes to the chapters with the second- and third-highest sales. Winfield City High School in Marion County received a $300 award, and Brewer High School in Morgan County received $200. Nine schools across the state participated in the fundraiser.

The mission of the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation is to support and advance agriculture in the State of Alabama through education and research, increase awareness of agriculture in Alabama through public programs and activities, improve and expand agricultural services and products for the benefit of all citizens and to establish and maintain high standards in agriculture.
