The American Village is open to the public with free admission on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 – A day

to celebrate the United States of America and honor those who have served and sacrificed for liberty.

“We invite you to join us in special tributes on this Memorial Day to America’s veterans,” said American

Village president and CEO Tom Walker. “We hope you will take this opportunity to experience the

National Veterans Shrine, and consider adding someone you know who has served or is serving in the

U. S. Armed Forces to the Veterans Register of Honor. I encourage you to help us tell the stories of our

veterans. We owe them our thanks, respect and honor.”

The American Village Above and Beyond Award for outstanding service and patriotism will be given to Mr.

Robert Lightfoot, Jr., for advancing the vision for space exploration as Acting Administrator of the National

Aeronautics and Space Administration – NASA’s highest-ranking official and senior space advisor to the

President; and as eleventh Director of the Marshall Space Flight Center.

The American Village will open Monday at 10:00 a.m. Scheduled events begin at 10:30 a.m. and continue

until 3:00 p.m. “A Salute to Our Veterans” begins at 11:00 a.m. in Liberty Hall. The Montevallo Community

Chorale will present a special musical tribute to veterans of the Vietnam War. A wreath laying ceremony

will take place at 1:00 in front of the National Veterans Shrine.

While Memorial Day is a somber occasion, we also celebrate what our country’s veterans fought for – our

freedoms as Americans. Memorial Day events at the American Village include hands-on children’s

activities, drilling with Washington’s Continental Army, 18th Century games, Colonial Crime and

Punishment, and opportunities to meet Patrick Henry, Martha Washington and other revolutionary figures.

Other activities are available throughout the day:

Visit our replica Oval Office and Concord Bridge

Visit the Pettus Randall Miniature Museum of American History

See the display of vintage military vehicles next to the USO Canteen in Estes Theatre

The American Village is located at 3727 Highway 119 in Montevallo, Alabama.
