Helena volleyball splits tri-match with Hoover, Spain Park

HOOVER – After a strong showing in the Oak Mountain High School tournament that resulted in a finish in the semifinals to open the 2018 volleyball season, the Helena Huskies looked to ride the momentum in a tri-match against Hoover and Spain Park on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Despite playing against 7A competition, Helena showed that they are more than worthy to compete with Hoover and Spain Park that should only help them as the season goes on.

In match No. 1 against Spain Park, both teams battled tough in two tightly contested sets but it was Helena that came out on top.

The Huskies won 25-21 and 25-19 to grab the win. Helena was led by Rosa Gambarelli who had 15 digs and 14 assists, Emma Johnson who had 12 digs, eight kills and one block and PG Garrison who finished with eight digs and four kills.

In the second match, Helena came up short against Hoover by scores of 25-15, 25-13.

In the match against the Bucs, Johnson led Helena with seven digs and eight kills and Megan Fortson with two kills and seven digs.

Helena’s first area match will be Tuesday, Sept. 11 against Pelham.
