COLUMBIANA – A new business is brewing on Main Street.

Kelly Schrader-Wilson, owner of The Loft Hair Studio in Columbiana, opened Insomnia Coffee Lounge in the Shops of Columbiana space in October.

“I went to one of the Main Street meetings, and we were talking about demographics and how we needed to get more of the young adults down here,” Schrader-Wilson, 46, said. “I thought Columbiana would benefit from a coffee shop.”

Freshly brewed coffee is available daily, along with various flavors of fruit smoothies.

“We do a lot of smoothies,” she said. “We can do combinations.”

Cold brew coffee could be added to the menu in the coming weeks, Schrader-Wilson said.

Food items include bagels with plain or flavored cream cheese; banana nut and blueberry muffins; a chicken salad or smoked turkey sandwich on a croissant or white or wheatberry bread; kale mac-n-cheese salad; and an array of baked desserts Schrader-Wilson makes herself.

“I’m loving making cupcakes and muffins and making people happy,” she said. “I like to have fresh stuff.”

She highly recommends the white chocolate blueberry cobbler cheesecake brulee, a cheesecake dessert as full of sweet flavor as its name suggests.

Schrader-Wilson has started with a limited menu to keep things simple in the shop’s first few weeks, but she said she plans to add new items to it.

On Nov. 6, she unveiled a new Italian meatball provolone sub.

She calls Penny Perrine her “right-hand woman” at Insomnia.

Although she’s not a morning person, she said, Schrader-Wilson has found running the shop to be “rewarding.”

She divides her time between it and her hair salon. She has been a hair stylist for 29 years.

“This is my first time in the food business,” she said. “I’m so grateful to the other shop owners and locals for the support.”

Insomnia Coffee Lounge shares the Shops of Columbiana space with Farm Charm and Eclectic Consignment.

Schrader-Wilson hopes to see local musicians perform in the sitting area of the building in the evenings, and to become a hub for people looking for a comfortable gathering spot.

“This is a great place for people to meet—students, professionals and church groups,” she said.
