On Thursday, Jan. 3 at approximately 8 a.m., she left her earthly body that had been filled and recently diagnosed with cancer, to move forward having been made new in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

She was a long-time and beloved teacher in both the Shelby County School system and the Mobile County School system, prior to returning to Shelby County and retiring after 40 years.

She was a member of Bay Springs Baptist Church where she continued teaching a Sunday School class with the Ladies of Bay Springs.

Bettye is survived by her husband, Gerald T. Garrett; two children, Angel Harris (Eddie) and Andy Garrett (Dona); grandchildren, Adrianne Blackwood (Pat), Andrew Harris (Amber), Sy Garrett, Austin Harris, and Breanna Garrett; great grandchildren, Ava and Jack; and four sisters, Shirley Sweat (EL/Bubba), Gladys Myers (Tom), Brenda Raines (Delano), and Charlotte Hall (Jim).
