Spain Park High School is set to display the talents of its students through the annual talent show open to the public Jan. 28 and a follow up performance for the student body on Jan. 30.
The event will be held in the school auditorium at 6 p.m., and is sponsored by the school’s choral department, which is led by the choir director Jim Schaeffer.
The talent show tends to be a popular event every year, giving students an opportunity to unwind from the stress of school work and present their creative endeavors to friends and family.
The students who will appear in the show are selected based on a preliminary round of auditions, according to Schaeffer, “students seeking to audition for the talent show can do so Jan. 22 starting at 6 p.m. or Jan. 23 starting at 4 p.m.”
Judging for the competition will be conducted by a “qualified panel of three judges from the Birmingham area.” The judges will pick the top five contestants, without declaring winners, who will then be given the opportunity to perform for the entire student body during the “Academic Opportunities” block of class time on Jan. 30.
The top three winners will receive special trophies to commemorate their achievement.
In the past there have been “singers, full rock bands, duets, trios, and even stand-up comedians” according to Schaeffer. There are sometimes more unusual like last year’s balancing act from Ben Hartwiger, otherwise known as “Balance Boi.”
There will be exhibition performances by the Rhapsody and Blues show choir and Silver Lining, a new “contemporary pop acapella group,” said Schaeffer.
