Pelham man accused of aggravated child abuse

PELHAM – A Pelham man remains in Shelby County Jail after he was arrested on Tuesday, Jan. 29, by the Pelham Police Department and charged with felony child abuse.

Dwight Anthony Balfour, 35, who lists an address on Shelby County 52 West, is accused of physically abusing a child on numerous occasions causing a lot of bruising and making it difficult for the child to breathe.

During one particular incident on Jan. 10, court documents state that Balfour held the victim against a window with his forearm against that child’s neck making it hard to breathe.

Balfour is charged with aggravated child abuse and domestic violence by strangulation or suffocation. His bond is set at $45,000.

Aggravated child abuse is a Class A felony, punishable upon conviction with 10 years to life in prison and up to $60,000 in fines, and domestic violence by strangulation or suffocation is a Class B felony, punishable upon conviction with two to 20 years in prison and up to $30,000 in fines.

Balfour’s case is assigned to District Court Judge Daniel Crowson Jr.
