NORTH SHELBY – Westminster School at Oak Mountain kindergarten students showed their appreciation for their mothers—and took the opportunity to show them what they’ve learned this year—during a Mother’s Day Tea on Friday, May 3.

“Moms, we are so thankful you were able to come today,” teacher Emily Jackson said as a welcome to the visitors. “I know how much you pour into your children, and we just wanted to say thank you.”

The students then sang songs they have learned, presented their mothers with notes they wrote them and presented portfolios of their work from the school year.

Isabelle Hunt went over her lessons with her mother, Rachel Hunt, recalling the gingerbread man who led her and her classmates on a tour of the school at the start of the year, and pointing out that the story of Queen Esther from the Bible was her favorite.

There are about 40 kindergarten students at Westminster, and they spent about two weeks decorating picture frames, and painting portraits of their moms and also flowers in a vase to accompany their notes.

“They love it,” Jackson said about the mothers who visited. “It’s just a sweet time for them to spend with their child.”

Jackson had written words on the white board the students had used to describe their moms: faithful, good listener, fun, caring, great, helpful, beautiful and amazing.

She started the Mother’s Day Tea in her first year at Westminster in 2002. This year was particularly special for Jackson because not only was her mother in attendance, but her son is a kindergartener this year, so she attended his presentation with the other moms.

“It was neat as a kindergarten teacher to see it from a mom’s perspective,” Jackson said.
