HELENA – There will be a new head coach leading the Helena High School softball program going forward, according to a release from the school on Thursday, June 20.
Scott Lowery will take over as the new head coach of the Huskies, replacing Heidi Kouveras, who held the head coaching position since Helena opened as a brand new high school in 2014.
“Helena High is proud to announce Lowery as our new Head Softball Coach,” a release from the school read. “Coach Lowery brings over 17 years of experience to his new position. This past year, he served as an assistant coach with the Helena softball program as well as serving as an assistant varsity football coach.”
Lowery played college baseball at Jefferson State Community College and The University of Montevallo. Upon completion of his playing career, Lowery served as a graduate assistant for The University of Montevallo before beginning his career at Pelham High School as a teacher and coach. During his time at Pelham High School, he coached baseball and football. After Pelham, Lowery joined the staff at Pleasant Grove High School where he was a varsity baseball assistant for four years before taking over as the head baseball coach. As a head baseball coach, he posted a record of 157-128 and his teams made the playoffs six out of seven years. In addition to his extensive background in baseball, Lowery has coached football for 17 years and brings a wealth of knowledge in strength and conditioning.
“I got into softball because of its similarities to baseball, the exciting pace of the game, and to work with student athletes that can be an inspiration to my two daughters,” Lowery said about starting his new position. “I truly enjoyed my experience this past season as an assistant coach in this prestigious softball program and look forward to the upcoming season.”
This past season, Helena made it to the 6A state tournament and won the Class 6A Area 8 Tournament.
