Jaguars fall to 0-2 in region play with loss to Mountain Brook

Spain Park’s football team was tied 14-14 late in the first quarter but could not hold on in a 49-35 home loss to Mountain Brook on Friday, Sept. 13.

The loss drops the Jaguars to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Class 7A, Region 3 play.

Mountain Brook is now 4-0 and 2-0.

After both teams scored on their opening possessions, Spain Park took a 14-7 lead on a 1-yard run by Harrison Barker.

MBHS reclaimed the lead in the first half, 21-14, and then took control of the game.

Down 42-22 with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter, Spain Park’s Callens ran for a five-yard touchdown, and Drake Tabor’s point-after brought the Jaguars to within two scores at 42-29.

Mountain Brook put the game out of reach, but SPHS scored late on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Barker to David Moultry and an eight-yard pass from Barker to Callens.

The teams combined for more than 1,000 yards of total offense and 53 first downs.

Barker completed 28 passes in 45 attempts for 357 yards.

His favorite target was Moultry, who caught 11 passes for 135 yards. Cooper Kelley (93 yards) and Jaylen Ward (54 yards) each caught five passes.

Callens led the Jags with 76 rushing yards on 19 carries.

Jake Houston led the Spain Park defense with 5.5 tackles.

Spain Park visits Hewitt-Trussville on Sept. 20 for another region matchup.
