Judy M. Merritt 5K Run and Eggstravaganza Scheduled for April 11
FROM STAFF REPORTS
HOOVER – Jefferson State Community College will host the Sixth Annual Judy M. Merritt Memorial 5K Race and Eggstravaganza on April 11, and the community will not want to miss it.
The fun will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 11 at Veterans Park off Valleydale Road.
“This event will combine a great 5K run and a massive free-to-all-ages Easter egg hunt for the community,” Jefferson State Event Coordinator Libby Holmes said. “The 5K race is always exciting, the free Kid’s Festival is great fun, but the age-specific egg hunt with more than 10,000 eggs and incredible prizes is what really makes this a unique event.”
Registration for the 5K is $20 ($15 for students and those 18 years old and under). The free community egg hunt (10:45 a.m.) will provide various age sections with more than 10,000 eggs and great prizes, including gift cards, cash, toys, TVs and more.
The Family Fun Day (from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) will feature picture opportunities with the Easter Bunny and the Chick-fil-A cows, face painting, glitter tattoos, bounce houses, inflatable slides, DJ, cotton candy, popcorn and Pepsi products.
Hundreds of Chick-fil-A sandwiches, Steel City Pops and City Bowls will be awarded through egg prize tickets and available on site.
In the 5K Race, awards will be given to first, second third place overall, and the top male and female runners in these categories: 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-plus.
“Our hope is to honor former Jefferson State President Judy Merritt, who served as the college’s president for 35 years, by raising money for scholarships and providing a wonderful family-friendly event for the community she loved,” Holmes said.
The event schedule for Saturday, April 11 is as follows:
- 9 a.m.–5K race
- 9-11:30 a.m.–free kids festival
- 10:45 a.m.–free-to-all-ages egg hunt
