FROM STAFF REPORTS

Due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus pandemic, and out of concern for the safety of its campus community, the University of Montevallo will extend its spring break for students and begin earlier than originally scheduled on Monday, March 16, according to a campus email from UM President John W. Stewart III, which was posted to UM’s website on March 13. Faculty and staff will report to work as normal the week of March 16-20.

Distance Education

Beginning Monday, March 30, through Friday, April 10, classes will be taught online and via other alternative instructional methods. Students will be contacted by their instructors via UM email and/or through Canvas regarding steps they should take to continue their academic coursework via distance education. Arrangements will be made to ensure any students remaining on campus have access to essential services.

UM administration will determine the week of April 6 if on-campus instruction will resume after April 10 for the remainder of the semester. Students are asked to refrain from returning to campus until in-person instruction resumes.

Housing and Dining

All students living in campus residence halls should be prepared to move belongings (electronic devices, books and other essential items) out of the halls for spring break by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 16. Dining accommodations will be made for all students who must remain on campus.

Events

All campus events have been cancelled, including student organization activities (both on campus and off). The Gulf South Conference has suspended all athletic competition, countable athletic related activities, and off-campus recruiting for an indefinite period.

These decisions are based on current best practices from the CDC and public health officials regarding social distancing as a prevention strategy for disease transmission. This remains a fluid situation and UM will continue to monitor it closely. More detailed instructions regarding campus operations related to this announcement will follow in a separate email.

Students are urged to continue monitoring their UM email, montevallo.edu/coronavirus-information and Canvas throughout the coming weeks for regular updates.
