MONTEVALLO – A former high school football standout died in an overnight shooting April 15 at a Montevallo apartment complex.

Tyler Olds, 19, has been identified by Shelby County Coroner Lina Evans as the victim in the case, which is under investigation.

Around 1 a.m. April 15, the Montevallo Police Department posted to Facebook that a 19-year-old male was shot at Wolf Creek Apartments located in the 800 block of Shelby Street.

Olds was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Olds was a former football player at both Montevallo and Calera high schools, where he had a special career.

As a sophomore at Montevallo, Olds not only had a first team All-County and All-State season, but he was named a finalist for the Back/Lineman of the Year award.

During that season, he posted 153 tackles to lead the county and added 22 tackles for loss and six sacks.

After moving to Calera for his senior season, Olds went on to be named to the All-County and All-State teams once again after posting 96 more tackles.

The MPD and the Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the shooting.

“We believe this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community,” MPD posted to Facebook. “This is an ongoing investigation, so more details may be released at a later time.”

The MPD is asking for anyone with information on the deadly incident to contact investigator Gray at (205) 665-1264.
