CHELSEA – Chelsea Parks and Recreation has shared updates regarding youth sports activities.

After the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the cancellation of spring sports, Chelsea’s Parks and Recreation department has resumed activities this summer and has announced plans for fall registration.

“We are glad to be able to provide a youth recreational baseball opportunity despite the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic,” read a release posted to the city’s Parks and Recreation webpage and Facebook page. “We were very disappointed in having to cancel the spring baseball and softball programs. The season was shaping up to be one of our biggest ever. We issued refunds to all families registered for the spring programs.”

The summer baseball season began with games on June 15 and will continue through the week of July 16.

Nearly 210 kids are playing in the summer program from T-ball to 12U. Information on fall baseball will be released in August.

Registration numbers did not allow for a full softball league for the summer. Plus, neighboring communities did not provide summer programs, which would have presented challenges in finding opponents.

“However, we are happy to be able to provide a large group of 8U girls an opportunity to work with some of our coaches each Tuesday night at the Highway 11 sports complex,” the release read. “We greatly appreciate Coach Gouge, Coach Cochran and Coach Hurston for volunteering time for these girls. Information on fall softball will be released in August.”

Volleyball has resumed at the Chelsea Community Center with extra precautions.

Camps will be held for fourth-sixth grade girls on July 7 and July 22 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Middle school camp will be held June 28 and June 29 from 9-11:30 a.m.

High school camp will be held June 28 and June 29 from 12-2:30 p.m.

Archery has resumed at the archery park next to the community center.

Onsite instruction will be provided to the YMCA archery program.

For more information, contact the community center staff at (205) 677-2052.

Regarding fall football, registration for tackle football has ended with 95 players registered.

“We will have tackle football teams in the fourth, fifth and sixth grade JSYFL leagues,” the release read. “Registration for our flag football program will continue through the end of June. We currently have 111 players registered for flag football from K/1 league through fifth grade.”

More information will be released soon on the status of the annual Chelsea High School Football Youth Camp.

Registration has ended for the fall youth cheerleading season.

“We are excited about the number of girls registered to cheer for our football teams this season,” according to the release. “We ended up with 138 girls registered for cheerleading. Uniform fitting sessions were run efficiently with the utmost focus on safety of our families, participants, board members and coaches. Uniforms have been ordered and paid for.”

More information about the 2020 Youth Cheerleading camp will be provided when available.
