NORTH SHELBY – The Oak Mountain Eagles came out of the gate firing to take the battle of 119 against the Briarwood Christian Lions to take the 79-62 home victory on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

The Eagles opened the game up with a 21-point first quarter thanks to baskets from eight scorers, including five points from Chris Kunard and four from Chase Lamey.

Luke Schultz’s six first-quarter points helped Briarwood get on the board, but Oak Mountain ended the quarter with a 21-9 lead.

The second quarter saw the Eagles keep the same scoring pace and build on their lead. Lamey, Emanuel Johnson and Grey Williams each scored five or more points to give the team 22 points in the period.

Stubbs and Drew Mears scored six points each to give the Lions 16 points in the second, and Oak Mountain took a 43-25 lead into the halftime break.

The teams were evenly matched in the third quarter as Mears took over on the offensive side for Briarwood with 13 points, but Lamey’s six points led the response for Oak Mountain to give each team 19 points in the third.

However, the first half gap was too much for the Lions to close despite their best efforts. Oak Mountain still led by 18 going into the fourth, and that helped it see out the win.

Briarwood outscored the Eagles 18-17 in the fourth quarter as Mears added six points and five from Garrett Witherington to give the Eagles the 79-62 victory.

Lamey led Oak Mountain with 21 points, Williams and Johnson each scored 10 points and Kunard and Gray Plaia had nine points apiece.

Mears topped all scorers with 25 points. Stubbs had 12 points, Schultz scored eight and Witherington added seven.
