NORTH SHELBY – The Briarwood Christian Lions secured their second victory over the Aggies this season to defeat the Sylacauga Aggies 55-23 on Friday, Dec. 15 at Briarwood Christian School.

The Lions opened up the game on fire shooting the ball and kept up a strong effort on both sides of the ball for much of the game.

The Lions started off with a 17-point first quarter, led by eight points from Mary Beth Dicen, and they paired that with a strong defensive effort.

Briarwood allowed just five points in the opening quarter to take a 12-point lead into the second quarter.

The shots kept flowing from Briarwood and Dicen, who hit a trio of three-pointers to reach 17 points before halftime, and Ann Tatum Baker found the scorebook for the first time in the game with six points in the second.

With the Lions defense holding Sylacauga to only seven more points before halftime, they increased their advantage to 32-12 at halftime.

Briarwood didn’t let up from there, saving its best scoring effort for the third quarter. Baker scored eight points in the third as the Lions added 19 more points.

That added 14 more points to Briarwood’s lead and helped put the game away.

With the game in hand, the Lions cruised from there, only scoring four points in the fourth but also allowing just four from the Aggies in their best defensive quarter of the game, which put the finishing touches on the 32-point victory.

Dicen scored a game-high 19 points, including her 17 first half points, and Baker scored 14 points, with all of them coming in the second and third quarter.

In addition, Emma Kerley earned 11 points to become the third Lion to reach double-figures, and Claire Anderson and Clara Crawford each added four points in the victory.
