Schools closed Jan. 17 due to freezing temperatures

Local school systems will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to freezing temperatures and icy travel conditions.

Shelby County Schools, Alabaster City Schools, Pelham City Schools and Hoover City Schools have announced that they will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to freezing weather. All afternoon activities have been cancelled.

Hoover City Schools shared that its decision to remain closed was made out of an abundance of caution with its primary concern to keep students and staff safe. Shelby County Schools and Pelham City Schools cited icy road conditions and continued freezing weather conditions.

According to the Weather Forecast Office, weather the night of Jan. 16 is expected to reach the single digits and teens with wind chills at or below zero in the north. Wednesday is expected to be in the mid 30s in the Birmingham area.

Local school systems first closed their doors on Jan. 12 due to the threat of severe weather, followed by the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on Jan. 15 and a second cancellation on Jan. 16.

Shelby County Schools announced it anticipates a return to a normal schedule on Thursday, Jan. 18.
