While much of the basketball world stood still for the last week with weather impacting games on Friday, Jan. 12 and Tuesday, Jan. 16, the latest basketball media rankings from the Alabama Sports Writers Association still saw changes from the previous week.

With the release of the latest rankings on Thursday, Jan. 18, Chelsea’s girls basketball team held steady at No. 8 in Class 7A, Thompson’s boys basketball team remained at No. 10 in Class 7A, Helena’s boys basketball team dropped to No. 8 in Class 6A and Montevallo’s boys basketball team moved down to No. 10 in Class 4A.

Chelsea remained at No. 8 in the Class 7A girls basketball rankings after the 20-3 Hornets played no games over the last week. After a 30-point win over Spain Park on Jan. 9, the Hornets were scheduled to face Oak Mountain on Friday, Jan. 12 and Hale County on Monday, Jan. 15 in the Brookwood Showcase.

While the showcase was cancelled with no makeup date, Chelsea’s area matchup with Oak Mountain was rescheduled to Thursday, Jan. 18 at 5:30 p.m. Afterwards, they will travel to Hewitt-Trussville on Friday, Jan. 19 for another area game.

The biggest mover in the rankings from the county was Helena, which slid five spots to No. 8 in the Class 6A boys basketball rankings. The Huskies fell to 17-5 after losing to Northridge on the road 51-45 on Saturday, Jan. 13, which was their only game in the past week after they rescheduled their games against Pelham and Center Point.

Helena will look to regain its momentum in area play against Briarwood on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Thompson held on to its No. 10 spot in the Class 7A boys basketball rankings. The Warriors’ lone game in the past week was a 58-45 loss to No. 4 Vestavia Hills after the game was moved up one day to Thursday, Jan. 11.

After its game against Ramsay was cancelled and matchup with Parker was postponed, Thompson will return to action in area play against rival Hoover at home on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.

Montevallo shifted down one spot to No. 10 in the Class 4A boys basketball rankings. The Bulldogs have been inactive since a 58-21 win over Holt in area play on Tuesday, Jan. 9 after games against West Blocton and Marbury were postponed, and that inactivity allowed other teams to pass them.

Montevallo will make its case to move up in the top 10 on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m. against Bibb County.
