Oak Mountain erupts for 18 runs in win over Vincent

VINCENT – After a tight 1-0 win over Mountain Brook two days earlier, the Oak Mountain Eagles turned up the offense on the road at county foe Vincent as they defeated the Yellow Jackets 18-1 on Thursday, Feb. 29.
The Eagles got right to work with a leadoff home run in the first inning by Sheridan Andrews to take the lead and never look back.
After an Emma Hawkins single and Anna DuBose was hit by a pitch, Carolyn Graham drew a walk to make the score 2-0 after the first inning.
Oak Mountain took that lead to eight in the bottom of the second. It scored off an Andrews RBI single, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Alea Rye, a two-run single by Dubose in the second, a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Sophia Williams.
The Eagles continued to shut down the Jackets offense and took advantage of a pair of runners on base with one out in the third to strike once again.
Rye hit an RBI single to score the first run of the inning, and two pitches later, DuBuse hit another RBI single to put Oak Mountain in run rule territory.
Ella Carrillo came in two batters later and singled to take the lead to 11-0.
In the top of the fifth, four straight runners reached base for the Eagles, and an error to cap off that sequence gave Oak Mountain its 12th run of the afternoon.
The Jackets forced a pop out on the next at bat, but another error led to two more runs for the Eagles.
Oak Mountain then drew another walk before Andrews kept the scoring going with a single. With the bases still loaded, Emma McGregor cleared the bases with an RBI single to score the Eagles’ final three runs of the game.
Vincent found success in its final chance at bat in the top of the fifth. After putting runners on second and third, Ava Reese Waldrop allowed Harley King to reach home plate on a groundout and put her team on the scoreboard.
Marian Cummings took home the win with six strikeouts in three shutout innings against just one hit and three walks.
The Eagles will look to keep their winning ways going in the Central-Phenix City tournament from March 1-2.
