Kelly Mooney has been elected to District 3 on the Alabama State Board of Education after winning the Republican primary on Tuesday, March 5.

“I’m humbled by God’s display of favor in this race,” Mooney said. “We had a great team of people who gathered behind us and for that I will be eternally grateful.”

Statewide, Mooney received nearly 38,000 votes overall which comprised more than 50 percent of the total votes. In Shelby County, Mooney received more than 15,000 votes which is nearly 60 percent of the total votes.

Mooney will serve on the Alabama Board of Education District 3 which represents multiple counties, including Shelby, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa and Elmore counties and small portions of Jefferson, Talladega and Montgomery counties.

“As I move forward, I am eager to collaborate with the board and all the stakeholders to ensure that every student in our district receives a quality education and (that we are) working together to address these concerns for education systems.”

Mooney beat out Republican candidates Melissa B. Snowden, Charlotte Meadows and Ann C. Eubank.

“I want to extend my appreciation to Ann and Charlotte for their dedication (and) commitment to improving our state’s education system,” Mooney said. “Running for office and putting yourself out there for that is no small feat and their willingness to engage in the race speaks volumes about their passion for meeting its future.”

Mooney replaces Stephanie Bell, who is not running for re-election after serving the state BOE for 30 years. Bell was first elected in 1994 and was reelected to eight consecutive terms. Bell is the longest serving board member and has also served twice as its vice president.

Mooney is an advocate for parents in education and a member of the Republican Women of Shelby County.

For 15 years, Mooney served as an administrator at Briarwood Christian School—working to help parents and families secure the best education for their children. According to her website, Mooney is dedicated to providing quality education and believes in empowering parents to play an active role in their children’s educational journey.

Mooney is a mother of three, a grandmother of eleven and has been married to State Rep. Arnold Mooney for more than 41 years.

Mooney is an advocate for parental choice in matters of education as well as school choice, back-to-basic curriculum and fiscal responsibility and transparency.
