Helena comes from behind to defeat Indian Springs for first time in program history

HELENA – The Helena Huskies were tested early to start out their area opener against Indian Springs as they went down 1-0, but they bounced back to earn a statement win.
The Huskies scored three straight goals to earn the 4-2 win on Thursday, March 7 at Helena High School.
The victory was the first time Helena has defeated Indian Springs in girls soccer. Springs entered the match with a 9-0 record against the Huskies dating back to 2015, but the Huskies flipped the script and earned a crucial area win in the process.
The teams played a scoreless opening 25 minutes before Indian Springs struck first with the opener. Springs scored in the 29th minute to take the 1-0 lead.
However, Helena had the last word of the half as it tied up the score shortly after. Riley Souers opened the scoring for the Huskies with a goal in the 36th minute, leaving the halftime score at 1-1.
Helena continued rolling in the second half and quickly took the lead after the break. In the 44th minute, Ashlyn Northrop let a deep shot loose and it sailed into the back of the net to put the Huskies up 2-1.
Just over 10 minutes later, Miah Rosener kept the scoring going with the Huskies third goal of the night, increasing the lead to 3-1 in the 56th minute.
That lead was not entirely safe as Indian Springs capitalized on a big goal-scoring opportunity deep into the second half.
A penalty conceded by Helena in the 72nd minute led to a penalty kick goal for Springs, which cut the deficit to one as the teams went into the final stretch.
Indian Springs sought the equalizer in the final minutes of the game, but with 51 seconds to go, Piper Stovall’s effort bounced just over the Indian Springs keeper to close out the scoring and take the 4-2 win.
Rosener ended the night with an assist in addition to her goal. Ashlynn Beery and Baileigh Rumage also added assists in the victory.
Beery led the way with six shots with five of them ending up on target. Rosener, Rumage and Kate Hendrix each ended the night with three shots.
Addisyn Cook took the win in goal with six saves against seven shots faced for a 90% save percentage.
Both teams will continue area play in their next matches on Tuesday, March 12. Helena will travel to Briarwood for a 5 p.m. kickoff while Indian Springs will face Pelham on the road at 5:30 p.m.
