Nine area basketball players made the cut for the 2023-24 All-State basketball teams when the Alabama Sports Writers Association released the rosters on Saturday, March 16.

Helena, Chelsea, Thompson, Spain Park, Pelham, Briarwood, Montevallo and Cornerstone each had at least one player represented on this year’s teams.

Alongside the roster announcement, the ASWA also named their coaches of the year, with Helena’s Lucas McDonald earning the honor for Class 6A boys basketball.

In just his second season with the Huskies, McDonald took them to their first-ever Final Four in school history after not making it past sub-regionals since 2019. He also helped them win their second straight area championship after Helena finished with a 5-0 record.

Josh Williams also represented the Huskies on the All-State teams after he earned a spot on the Class 6A First Team.

The senior guard averaged 18.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while taking his career points total to 1,483. He also racked up 67 steals to help Helena on both ends of the floor en route to a 24-7 record.

Chelsea’s Haley Trotter earned a spot on the Class 7A Second Team, which is the first appearance by a Hornets player on the First, Second or Third Team in Class 7A.

Trotter won Shelby County Player of the Year as she averaged a double-double a game with 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game as Chelsea reached the Elite Eight behind a 26-5 record.

On the boys side, Colben Landrew of Thompson made the Class 7A Second Team after his strong sophomore season.

The two-sport star powered the Warriors offense with 15.0 points and 5.2 points per game as Thompson made its first Elite Eight since 2013.

Landrew wasn’t the only Warrior to earn an All-State spot as Jayla Forbes earned a place on the Class 7A girls Third Team.

Starting for Thompson as just a freshman, the 6-foot-6 Forbes averaged a double-double behind 12.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game.

In Class 6A, Tee King made the All-State team as a sophomore for Pelham, claiming a spot on the girls Second Team.

King led the county in scoring with 19.1 points per game as she eclipsed 1,000 points for her career, adding in 3.7 rebounds and 2.4 points per game in the Panthers’ Elite Eight run to finish as a finalist for Shelby County Player of the Year and earn an All-County First Team spot.

Briarwood’s Drew Mears rounded out the county representatives on the Class 6A All-State teams with a place on the boys Third Team.

The sophomore standout led the county in points with 23.6 per game en route to setting single-season school records for points with 708 and 3-pointers with 86.

In Class 4A, Ja’Von Chism finished out his Montevallo career with a boys All-State Third Team place.

Chism commanded the floor for the Bulldogs with 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game and averaged 24 points and eight rebounds in area play to help Montevallo finish runner-up in its area.

Spain Park’s Korbin Long earned a Class 7A boys Honorable Mention after averaging 13.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in his final injury-shortened season with the Jags.

Cornerstone also walked away with All-State honors as senior guard Noah Gassner earned a spot on the AISA boys All-State First Team.

Gassner led the Chargers in scoring with 19.8 points per game to go with 6.0 rebounds a night to help Cornerstone reach the Elite Eight in the Class A playoffs.
