ALABASTER – Kids excitedly rushed across the field to gather colorful Easter eggs that were dropped from a helicopter during the Alabaster Church of God’s annual Easter egg drop.

Families enjoyed a variety of activities during the event which was held on Saturday, March 30 at the Alabaster Church of God.

“Every year we try to have something for the kids” said Ken Stroup who has served at the Alabaster Church of God as pastor for 15 years.

During the event, a helicopter came and dropped nearly 8,000 eggs in total on the field for children to collect. Each drop was broken down into age groups with one final drop for all of the kids to collect. In addition to the Easter eggs, families in attendance could enjoy snacking on popcorn, snow cones and meet the Easter Bunny.

Stroup said the event wasn’t about getting people to come to the Alabaster Church of God but instead building a community.

“We want (people) to come, we’ll talk to them, we’ll pray with them but it’s not about you coming to this church,” he said. “It’s about you getting blessed and having a part of something where we’re celebrating the resurrection of Christ. That’s what this is about, it’s not about building a church, it’s about building a community.”

The Easter egg drop has become a tradition for the church ever since the inaugural event roughly 13 years ago. In addition to the egg hunt, the church services the community in other ways, including a food bank that feeds nearly 150 families.

“We do all kinds of events to give back to the community,” Stroup said. “We try to reach souls for Christ. That’s what we’re here for.

Before preaching for the Alabaster Church of God for the past 15 years, Stroup spent 36 years evangelizing around the world and preaching in 47 different states. On May 5, Stroup will travel to the Beulah Church of God where he preached his first sermon in celebration of 50 years of evangelism.

The Alabaster Church of God is located at 310 1st Ave. W. in Alabaster.
