ALABASTER – Locals will have the opportunity to participate in a fun run and learn from a variety of resources during the very first Alabaster Goes Red event.

God Did It Ministries will hosts the inaugural Alabaster Goes Red event on May 11 from 10 a.m. to noon at Alabaster’s Patriots Park. The event will provide information on strokes and spread awareness. The fun run will begin at 10:45 a.m.

“It’s going to be like a pep rally,” said Sanchez Tanniehill, founder of God Did It Ministries.

The event’s purpose is to spread awareness about the dangers of strokes—a mission that hits close to home for Tanniehill who survived a stroke at just six weeks old.

“I wanted to highlight different stroke victims or people who passed away from strokes,” he said. “I wanted resources, I wanted something for the stroke victims, just to encourage them to keep going. (There are) going to be some hills and valleys, but you’re going to get through it.”

During the event there will be fun activities for attendees to enjoy such as inflatables, giveaways, food trucks and a fun run as well as resources to help educate residents about strokes. There will be physicians present from the greater Birmingham area and Heart South will attend the event and provide blood pressure checks.

Cheerleaders from Thompson High School are also planned to make an appearance at the event and will perform for those in attendance.

“I just encourage people to come out and have a good time,” Tanniehill said. “I’m going to share my story through music.”

Tanniehill said attendees are welcome to wear red shirts in recognition of stroke awareness and, for those interested, they will be selling red stroke awareness bows for residents to decorate their mailbox with. Awareness bows can be purchased online for $5 at Givebutter.com/redbow.

God Did It Ministries serves the Alabaster area and was founded by Tanniehill who is an Alabaster native, author and gospel recording artist. The organization gained its namesake from Tanniehill’s autobiographical work, “God Did It.”
