Shelby County softball teams now sit atop the top two classifications in the state after the Helena Huskies rose to No. 1 in Class 6A, joining the 7A No. 1 Thompson Warriors on top of the latest rankings from the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

In addition, with the release of the latest rankings on Thursday, April 11, six different baseball teams are now ranked in the top 10 of their respective classifications, including the Thompson Warriors, Spain Park Jaguars, Oak Mountain Eagles, Helena Huskies, Shelby County Wildcats and Vincent Yellow Jackets.

Helena softball team is now 30-4 on the season thanks to an active 12-game win streak. They have gone undefeated since the last rankings released, beating Briarwood and Pelham in area play and going 5-0 at the Claw Classic at Sumiton Christian School to claim the tournament title.

Thompson also sits at 30-4 on the season after it reached the finals of the Gulf Coast Classic III during spring break. The Warriors beat Chilton County, Curry, Gardendale and Houston Academy in the knockout rounds before falling to Hewitt-Trussville in the finals.

That championship game loss was Thompson’s lone defeat since the last rankings were released. Since that loss to the Huskies, the Warriors have won three straight games against Tuscaloosa County, Spain Park and Vestavia Hills.

Thompson’s baseball team also joined the softball Warriors in the top five of Class 7A as it came in at No. 4 in the 7A baseball rankings.

The 23-8 Warriors went undefeated over spring break in Tennessee capped off by wins over Neuqua Valley and Oakland during the latest rankings period. While they dropped the first game of their area series to Vestavia Hills, they came back to win the series in a doubleheader on April 4.

Three Shelby County teams are in the top 10 of the Class 7A baseball rankings as Spain Park and Oak Mountain are alongside Thompson in the latest poll.

Spain Park is now No. 8 in 7A and 22-10 after going 5-1 at the Buccaneer Classic with wins over Olentangy Orange, Prattville, Middle Tennessee Christian, Palatine and O’Fallon. Back in area play, the Jags split the series with Oak Mountain and took a 1-0 lead over Hewitt-Trussville.

Oak Mountain checks in at No. 10 after it bounced back from a pair of losses to close spring break with area wins over Spain Park and Chelsea to improve to 20-10 on the season.

In Class 6A, the 19-12 Helena Huskies are No. 7 in the latest rankings. Helena clinched the area championship with a sweep of Calera and a win against Chilton County in the series opener, and they went 3-2 at the Buccaneer Classic with wins over Prattville, Middle Tennessee Christian and Leeds.

Shelby County also clinched its area championship with a sweep of Sylacauga, and the 19-9 Wildcats are No. 8 in Class 5A this week. They also beat 2A No. 2 Pike Liberal Arts and Shades Valley during the latest rankings eligibility period.

Vincent is also in the playoffs as area champions after finishing off an undefeated run through area play, and the Jackets are No. 3 in Class 2A with a 22-3 record.

They went undefeated over the two-week span since the last rankings with wins over Ranburne and Victory Christian and an area sweep of B.B. Comer.
