ALABASTER - John Myrick will serve another five years on the Alabaster City Schools Board of Education after being reappointed over six other candidates for the spot by the Alabaster City Council.
The City Council reappointed Myrick to place three on the Alabaster City Schools Board of Education during a regularly scheduled council meeting on Monday, April 22.
“I am honored to earn another term on the Alabaster board of education,” Myrick said. “As a founding board member for Alabaster City Schools, I have seen the full evolution of this school system since its inception. To say that we have made great strides is an understatement. Collaborating with my fellow board members and Dr. (Wayne) Vickers to create forward momentum for our students, educators, parents and community is very fulfilling. It is also exhilarating to see happy faces, whether young or teenagers, brought about by some special effort made within the school community,”
Myrick was first appointed to the BOE at its inception in 2012 and was reappointed for a second term in 2014 and a third term in 2019. He has served in the field of education since 1963, starting as a math teacher and later teaching students in the field of music. Myrick has also has been a member of numerous symphonies and musical organizations across the Gulf Coast area from Florida to Louisiana. Myrick has a bachelor and master of arts in music education from the University of South Mississippi. His doctor of education degree placed an emphasis on the field of educational leadership.
“I am extremely grateful to the Alabaster City Council and other leadership for their vote of confidence in me,” Myrick said.
Myrick was selected out of seven candidates who were interviewed for the position by the Alabaster City Council.
“We’ve had seven excellent candidates for this position,” Councilmember Jamie Cole said. “We make every effort when we have great candidates like that to find places for them to serve, so I’m sure we’ll do that in this regard.”
Myrick was present at the city council meeting when his reappointment was approved and City Council President Sophie Martin commended him for his efforts in the city’s school system.
“Thank you so much for all that you do for our school system, for all that you do for our relationship with the city,” Martin said. “You’re just an honor to serve with and we just appreciate so much all of your commitment and your hard work because I know that you’ll go above and beyond to serve in this role.”
Myrick will continue to serve on the Alabaster City Schools BOE with a term expiring June 2029.
