NORTH SHELBY – Following changes made by House Bill 89, the members of the Shelby County Legislative Delegation will begin accepting applications for the North Shelby Library Board on Saturday, June 1.

Since its inception in 1988, the North Shelby Library District has had a board of five individuals elected from the community. After 36 years of being the only library in the state to have an election-based board, the North Shelby Library Board has been changed to be appointment-based after the passage of House Bill 89.

The Shelby County Legislative Delegation, acting on behalf of the North Shelby Library District, will open applications for this board on Saturday, June 1.

According to the new guidelines established in House Bill 89, one member of the library board must be an owner of commercial property within the district. In the event of a vacancy on the board, the position will be filled in the same manner as the original appointment for the unexpired term of the vacant position.

To apply for one of the five positions available on the North Shelby Library Board, applications can be found at shelbylegislators.com beginning on June 1.

Applications may be mailed or emailed to the Shelby County Legislative Office by 5 p.m. on June 30, 2024. Any mailed applications must be postmarked on or before June 30.

Applications can be mailed to 1134 County Services Drive, Pelham, AL 35124, or emailed to mimi@shelbylegislators.com.

All appointments made will be done in accordance with Legislative Act #2024-122 and final appointments will be filed with the Shelby County Probate Office.

Questions may be directed to Legislative Director Mimi Penhale, by phone at (205) 620-6610 or by email at mimi@shelbylegisaltors.com.
