Local sportsmen recently reeled in more than 80 pounds of fish while raising money for Calera Elementary School.

Calera Elementary held its second-annual Fishing for Education Tournament April 17 at Beeswax Park.

The event attracted six major sponsors, 37 boats and raised about $4,100 for the school, said school Bookkeeper Tina Allen. School officials will use all money raised during the tournament to purchase new technology equipment for the school.

“We really had a great turnout,” Allen said. “Everyone out there had a ball.”

Tournament officials awarded prizes to the top five two-person teams in the event, and for the heaviest fish overall.

Ron Nail and James Jones took home the $1,000 first prize with 17.41 total pounds of fish, and won $370 for having the heaviest single fish at 4.69 pounds.

Frank Smith and Tony Harris won the $850 second-place prize with 15.45 total pounds of fish, and Jimmy Lewis and Lee Foster took home the $650 third-place prize with 15.13 total pounds of fish.

Jayme Aman and Lacey Aman won the $450 fourth-place prize with 14.28 total pounds of fish and Joey Hamilton and Chris Morrow took home the $250 fifth-place prize with 13.6 total pounds.

In the age 12 and under land fishing category, Evan Aparicio won the $40 first-place prize, Caleb King won the $35 second-place prize and Emily Allen took home third place.

Sergio Aparicio and Adam King each won $25 in the age 13 and older land fishing tournament.

Major event sponsors included Lafarge, Stabridg Construction, Martin Marietta, Dr. John Bagget, Hardees and Fred Watson with APEX Realty.
