Two people died early Sunday morning when their car crashed on Interstate 65 South in Calera.

The driver, Dwight Lilly, 35, of Montevallo, died along with the passenger, Letty Whisenhunt, 44, of Montevallo.

Sgt. Tim Sartain of the Alabama State Troopers said the two were traveling southbound on I-65 at about 5:30 Sunday morning when their 1999 Toyota Camry left the roadway as they began to take exit 234 for the Shelby County Airport. The car struck a concrete wall and overturned. No other vehicles were involved.

On Monday, Nov. 28, Calera firefighter Chris Roy died in an accident at the same exit where the exit ramp intersects Shelby County 87. Sartain said there was no similarity in the two accidents, and investigators were uncertain whether speed or moisture was a factor in Sunday’s crash
