Four wrestlers earn multiple wins in Red and Black Duals

Four Thompson High School wrestlers earned multiple wins in the Warriors’ Red and Black Duals intrasquad exhibition Nov. 12.

The Warriors were led by two defending state champions.

Junior Josh Gillaspie, a defending Class 6A state champion in the 152-pound weight division. Gillaspie, who finished his sophomore season with a 51-11 record, pinned teammates Trey Berryhill and Cahmon Holder during the Red and Black Duals.

Sophomore Nick Hall, a defending Class 6A state champion in the 140-pound weight division, also pinned Berryhill and Holder in the exhibition. Hall completed his freshman season with a 56-6 record.

Freshman Brewer Gilliland, who qualified for the Class 6A state tournament as an eighth-grader last season, also earned two pins in the exhibition. Gilliland pinned teammates Luis Munoz and Moore.

Sophomores Austin Gould and Hayden Franklin also earned two victories in the Red and Black Duals.

Gould won by decision over Conner Gilson and won by technical fall over Branden Belser. Franklin won by decision over teammates Austin Wilhite and Nick Lowe.

Returning Class 6A tournament qualifiers John Austin (J.A.) Jones, Matt Gilson Reed Jacks, Jesse Masters and Jimmy Miller also picked up wins during the Red and Black Duals.

Jones, who was wrestled in the 145-pound weight division final at the USA Wrestling Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals in Fargo, N.D. this summer, pinned teammate Brandon Morgan.

Gilson won by technical fall over Clay Anthony, Jacks earned a decision over Mario Haynes, Masters pinned Hunter Pinneo and Miller pinned David Capers during the exhibition.

Anthony, Belser, Wilhite, Munoz, Holder, Shane Evans, Jack Scott, Reid Simpson, Alex Costes, Cody Albarado, Colt Jones, Clint Milligan, Wil Fondren and Hunter Gatlin also earned a victory each in the Red and Black Duals.

Thompson opens the season Nov. 24 at the Hewitt-Trussville Duals.
