Montevallo falls to hot-shooting Hurricanes

The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Georgia Southwestern State University squad and came away with a 68-55 loss in a Peach Belt Conference contest Feb. 5.

The Hurricanes hit 53.3 percent of their shots from the floor compared to the Falcons’ 39.6 percent shooting from the floor.

Montevallo (13-7 overall, 6-5 in Peach Belt Conference) was led by junior Antoine Davis, who had 12 points and three steals.

Sophomore Jonas Brown had nine points. Junior DeMarcus Catchings had eight points and four rebounds. Senior Ronald Severtsgaard added eight points and a team-high five rebounds in the defeat.

The Falcons struggled shooting, including hitting a season-low 46.4 percent from the free-throw line. Montevallo was just 13-of-28 from the charity stripe.

The Hurricanes took a quick 10-4 lead in the opening four minutes of the game. Montevallo answered with a 9-3 run of its own to tie the game at 12-12 on a layup by Davis.

The Falcons then took a two-point lead and held onto it for several minutes before the Hurricanes began an 8-0 run at the 4:45 mark of the first half to take a 29-23 lead. The Falcons were eventually able to cut that lead to just three points, 30-27, as time expired.

With 11:20 to play in the game and the Falcons up by two points, the Hurricanes began a 22-6 run that lasted seven minutes and 45 seconds and gave Georgia Southwestern State a 63-49 lead. The Falcons were unable to make any sort of comeback in the final minutes.
