A group of Alabaster Girl Scouts recently earned one of the top scouting awards while bringing cheer to senior citizens at the Riverchase Village Retirement Community in Hoover.

Thompson Middle School eighth-grade girls in Troop 993 spent the past year selecting craft activities, and traveled to Riverchase Village on a monthly basis to lead the seniors in the activities, said troop leader Geri Warman.

The Girl Scouts individually led all of the craft sessions, Warman said.

The project helped the troop earn its Silver Award, which is the precursor to the highest Girl Scout honor, the Gold Award.

“These girls have worked really hard,” Warman said.

To wrap up the yearlong project, the Girl Scout troop organized and held a Christmas party at Riverchase Village on Dec. 9. The scouts also held an art and talent show, during which the girls showcased their talents and displayed their art for the seniors.
