ALABASTER — It may have been homecoming for the Evangel Lightning off the field, but on the field it was business as usual, as ECS dominated Evangel Family Christian, 70-0, Oct. 4.

Nate Scott opened up scoring for Evangel, as he took a 2-yard run in for six. Dru Bell added the point after to make it 7-0 with 5:50 to go in the first quarter. Andrew Thompson then hit Josh Letson on a 46-yard touchdown pass that made it 14-0 after Bell’s kick.

In the second quarter, Thompson opened up with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Hoge, which Bell followed up with an extra point. Nate Scott then tossed a six-point play to Clay O’Neal from six yards out. Bell’s kick made it 28-0. A few plays later, after a Grant Webster fumble recovery,  Webster found the end zone on a 2-yard run. Bell’s kick was no good, and ECS led 34-0. O’Neal scored next on a 7-yard run to make it 40-0 after a missed extra point.

Scott scored next when he broke a 20-yard run, and the Lightning made it 48-0 after a Thompson to Hoge two point conversion.

With 32 seconds remaining in the half, Mason Murphy scampered for a 27-yard touchdown run. Bell’s point after was good, and the Lightning took a 55-0 lead into the half.

After the half, Murphy scored on another 37-yard run, but Bell’s extra point was no good. With six seconds left in the quarter, David Sheppard took a 35-yard run to the house for six. The two point conversion was no good, and the Lightning led 67-0.

The final points came on a 32-yard field goal by Bell, which made the score 70-0, in favor of ECS.

Nate Scott led Evangel in rushing, tallying 106 yards on seven rushes with two touchdowns. Thompson was 3-of-4 for 65 yards and two touchdowns passing. Hoge led all receivers with 19 yards and a score.

Defensively, Tyler Byrd had six solo tackles, two for loss, with a fumble recovery.
