A 20-year-old Pelham man will spend the next three years on supervised probation after he pleaded guilty to two felony counts of distribution of a controlled substance and one misdemeanor count of third-degree assault.

Devon Carnell Wright pleaded guilty to the charges during a Dec. 4 hearing in the Shelby County Courthouse. After accepting the guilty pleas, Circuit Court Judge Dan Reeves sentenced Wright to seven years in prison, but split the sentence to three years of supervised probation.

While on probation, Wright must pass random drug and alcohol screens, must complete a substance abuse treatment program and must surrender his driver’s license for suspension.

According to court documents, the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force arrested Wright on Nov. 11 and charged him with the two distribution of a controlled substance crimes.

According to court documents, Wright pleaded guilty to selling marijuana in the 2100 block of Pelham Parkway on Feb. 5 and selling powder Ecstasy in the Colonial Village apartment complex off U.S. 280 on Feb. 8.

When he was arrested on Nov. 11, Wright was out on bond on charges of second-degree assault, obstruction of justice by using a false identity and resisting arrest, for which he was arrested on June 20, 2012.

Through his plea agreement, Wright’s obstruction of justice and resisting arrest charges were dropped, and his probation sentence for the assault charge will run concurrently with his distribution of a controlled substance sentence.

According to Wright’s indictment, he was charged with the second-degree assault charge when he “knocked (a Hoover police officer) down a hill, causing injury to right arm, left hand and knee.”
