With summer vacation quickly approaching, the Shelby County School System will once again introduce the Summer Feeding Program beginning June 1 at various school locations around the county.

The Summer Feeding Program is designed to provide meals to all children without charge regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service according to a Shelby County Schools press release.

The program will be offered at Calera Intermediate from June 1– July 24, Elvin Hill Elementary from June 1 – June 26, Montevallo Elementary from June 1 – July 24 and Vincent Elementary from June 1 – July 24. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 – 8 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. – noon.

“The feeding program has had a lot of success in the past and there are certain areas that have a higher turn out than others,” said Child Nutrition Program Coordinator Nathan Hayes. “The meals will be free to those 18 years of age and younger.”

Adult visitor breakfast and lunch will also be available. The cost for an adult visitor breakfast is $2 and the cost for an adult visitor lunch is $4. Tea is also available for 75 cents. Carryout meals will not be allowed for students.

The federal government reimburses the county for all meals served, which makes the program free for the county.
