MT LAUREL – Dolores Hydock will present her one-woman show, “In Her Own Fashion,” on July 9 at the Double Oak Community Church Cafe in Mt Laurel from 7-8:30 p.m. This event is free to the public thanks to the Friends of Mt. Laurel Library.

In Her Own Fashion tells the true story of Ninette Griffith, the Fashion Coordinator for Loveman’s Department Store in Birmingham in the 1950s and 1960s, in her own words.

“Ninette had an eyebrow-raising love affair (or two) in the 1930s, a high-ranking military husband in the 1940s, a high-profile fashion career in the 1950s and an opinion on everything from the Civil War (her grandfather fought in it) to blue jeans for women (I designed them and sold them before Calvin Klein was born),” Hydock wrote in an email.

Hydock spent more than 18 months talking to Griffith about her life, her opinions and her experiences.

“Ninette shared stories of her life that nearly spanned the 20th century,” Hydock wrote. “She was a sassy college girl during the Depression, a military wife in the 1940s, a career woman in the 1950s, and a born storyteller her entire life.”

When Hydock began interviewing Griffith, she was not intending the information that she received to become a play.

“I just wanted to record her stories because they were wonderful stories and I thought she or her family might like to have a keepsake of them,” Hydock wrote.

“The show is funny, touching, and a wonderful portrait of a strong, smart woman who always lived life ‘in her own fashion,’” Hydock concluded.

Hydock has several one-woman shows in her rapporteur. Information about each of these shows, video excerpts from In Her Own Fashion and her other shows, a schedule of upcoming performances, and much more can be found at Storypower.org.
