Pair of Falcons finish undefeated in Charger Classic

HUNTSVILLE – University of Montevallo senior Allison Howell teamed with freshman Alice Copland to go undefeated in both singles’ and doubles’ action Sept. 18-19 at the Charger Classic hosted by UAH.

“The Charger Challenge was a great event to get a high number of quality matches for our entire team,” Montevallo women’s tennis head coach Adam Albertsen said. “I really like how our young team competed in every match and we pulled out some very impressive wins. Now we need to build off our play and use this as a learning experience before the next tournament.”

Howell finished 3-0 in singles’ action in the event, while Copland won her lone singles’ match. Howell and Copland paired up for doubles’ action and finished 2-0 in the event.

Howell defeated Naomi Esteve of UAH 6-1, 7-5 on the opening day of the event.

The Cullman native also swept the Chargers’ Aniek Remmerswaal 6-4, 6-0 on the second day. She defeated Shannon McEvoy of West Alabama 6-1, 6-1 in her other singles’ match in the event.

Copland defeated Georgina Salom of West Alabama 8-6 in her lone singles’ match.

Howell and Copland defeated Marta Briega and Marleen Gort of UAH 8-2, while also topping Madeline Skaras and Evelyn Moreno of West Alabama 8-3 in doubles’ action in the event.

Freshman Julia Berg also finished unbeaten in singles’ action. Berg won her first set against Marta Briega of UAH 6-4 before Briega retired in the second set facing a 3-1 deficit. Berg also topped the Chargers’ Madi Gulick 6-0, 6-4 in her final singles’ match.

Freshmen Alina Munteanu and Emily Beatty finished 2-1 in doubles’ action in the event.

Munteanu and Beatty topped the Chargers’ Madeline Skaras and Evelyn Moreno 8-7 with a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker in doubles’ action on the first day of the event. The duo also defeated Salom and Sandra Florez of West Alabama 8-3 in doubles’ action on day one.

The Falcons will return to action in the UAH Round Up on Oct. 9-11.
