CHELSEA – In the wake of the July 7 shooting in Dallas that claimed five police officers’ lives, city leaders in Chelsea have voiced support of local law enforcement officers and their service to Shelby County residents.

On July 12, the Chelsea City Council passed a resolution recognizing “the outstanding work the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office does in ensuring a safe quality of life for our citizens.”

“We thank the citizens of Chelsea,” Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego said. “It’s a beautiful, safe city, and we try to make it as safe as we can.”

“The City of Chelsea recognizes the personal commitment that the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the Shelby County contract deputies and school resource officers make in order to keep Chelsea a safe and friendly city,” the resolution read. “The City wholeheartedly supports the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office in its efforts, as well as all law enforcement agencies with the same commitment. Furthermore, we call on all citizens in our great nation to give support to their law enforcement heroes and to settle differences with peace and dignity as these are the foundations of the American way of life.”

“I could not be more proud than to have the opportunity to read this and for us to adopt this,” councilman Dale Neuendorf said.

The council also accepted a $43,000 bid from Double J Steel (Jeffrey Jones) from Clanton for the maintenance building at the new Chelsea Sports Complex located off Shelby County 11 at 171 Grand Slam Drive.

The bid includes furnishing all labor, equipment and materials to supply and erect a 40-by-60-by-14-foot steel building.

After the bid was submitted, it was determined a 30-by-70-foot door, six skylights and a painted roof also were necessary to complete the building, according to the resolution. Double J Steel has agreed to provide the extra items not exceeding $49,999.

Regarding annexation and de-annexation business, the council approved a de-annexation request submitted by Two Mountains, LLC, for property located off Shelby County 11 next to the sports complex and the Highlands subdivision.

The property contains about 34,756 square feet. The de-annexation allows for the entrance road into the Two Mountains property to be annexed into the city of Pelham so all of the Two Mountains property is in Pelham.

The council also approved the following proposed ordinances:

•An annexation ordinance for Scott and Liz Weygand for property located on Shelby County 336 containing 45 acres.

•An annexation ordinance for Scott and Liz Weygand for a half-portion of property located on Shelby County 336 containing 69.1 acres.

•An annexation ordinance for Laurence and Jane Weygand for a 200-foot strip portion of property containing 21.6 acres.

•An annexation ordinance for Lawrence and Mary Stewart for property located on 161 Stirrup Cove containing 3 acres.
