ALABASTER – Those looking to help the environment while adding some beauty to their landscapes will have a chance to do so for free during the city of Alabaster’s upcoming Arbor Day celebration.
The city will observe Arbor Day on Saturday, Feb. 24, beginning at 8 a.m. in the maintenance building at Veterans Park at 7305 Alabama 119. The event will be held rain or shine.
Event attendees will be able to register beginning at 8 a.m., and the city will begin distributing free trees at 9 a.m. to Alabaster residents and businesses. Because the tree distribution is first-come, first-served, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department is encouraging locals to arrive early.
The Parks and Recreation Department will team up with a local Boy Scout troop to distribute 125 trees in 3- or 5-gallon containers, and will give away 200 saplings.
The tentative lineup for the trees will be:
-Sugar maple (20)
-Flowering dogwood – Cherokee princess (20)
-Flowering dogwood – Pink (10)
-Flowering dogwood – Red (5)
-River birch (20)
-Jane magnolia (20)
-Green corkscrew willow (20)
-Crape myrtles – Cherry red (10)
