Habitat for Humanity volunteers are perhaps two weeks away from finishing the house that Christine Schultz and family will call home.

“Things are going well down in Montevallo with Christine’s home, said Beth Jerome, Habitat Birmingham’s director of development. “We’re getting close.”

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in July to kickoff the eight to 10 week construction process sponsored by the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders’ South Chapter. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house is located on Highway 206.

Each Habitat home is approximately 1200 square feet, Jerome said.

Schultz and her two children, Jes, 6, and Samantha, 3, are anticipating settling into their new living space.

“Owning a new home would help us in so many ways,” Schultz said. “Most importantly, it will help me to financially be able to provide for my family. It will give us more room where we wouldn’t be so cluttered. We can just make a better home where my kids can grow up and feel secure.”

The Schultz home is the second home built by Habitat Birmingham in Shelby County, Jerome said. Sixteen homes were previously built by Habitat Shelby County before it merged with Habitat Birmingham in 2006.

Habitat Birmingham will begin its next Shelby County project on Sept. 27., when groundbreaking begins on another Montevallo home for Natasha Rutledge and her daughters, Amilyia, 11, Chemesia, 7, and Takhishilya, 6. Asbury United Methodist Church will sponsor the home, which will be located on County Road 206.
