CALERA – Lafarge’s Roberta Cement Plant has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Energy Star, for its demonstrated efforts to protect the environment though superior energy performance. This is the second year in a row that the plant has received the recognition.

“Lafarge is pleased to accept EPA’s Energy Star in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts,” said Terry Bennett, Operations Manager at the Roberta Plant. “Through this achievement, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs. It takes more that just a modern plant to achieve this recognition; it takes commitment at every level of the organization”

Earning the Energy Star highlights Lafarge’s Roberta plant within the top 25 percent of cement plants in the nation according to EPA’s plant energy performance indicators.

To earn the Energy Star, Lafarge took the following actions:

– Continuous monitoring of all energy consumption within the plant

– Use of alternate raw materials from renewable resources and waste products

– Use of alternate fuels rather than non-renewable resources such as natural gas and coal

– Continuous improvements in the efficiency of the equipment and operations of the plan
