HELENA – On Wednesday, May 8, the Helena Beautification Board announced the completion of the second phase of its planting project at Lee Spring Park, bringing a variety of new native shrubs and flowers to boost the park’s scenery and sustainability.

The planting project began in April 2023 and represented a commitment to community engagement and environmental sustainability by allowing volunteers to foster the native ecosystem.

Helena Beautification Board Chairman Rebekah Henderson expressed her gratitude to all the volunteers who contributed their time and effort to make phase two of the planting project a reality.

“We are immensely proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our volunteers throughout this project,” Henderson said. “Their commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship is truly inspiring and has played a crucial role in the success of the planting initiative at Lee Springs Park.”

Henderson emphasized the importance of community involvement in preserving natural spaces and promoting biodiversity.

“The beautification board believes that by working together, we can create a healthier, more sustainable future for our community and our planet,” Henderson said. “The support we have received from volunteers and local residents is a testament to our shared commitment to environmental conservation and the preservation of our natural resources.”

Liaison to the board and Helena City Councilmember Chris VanCleave also commended the efforts of the volunteers and reiterated the city’s dedication to promoting volunteerism and sustaining the quality of life for all residents.

“The completion of phase two of the planting project at Lee Springs Park is a testament to the power of volunteerism and community engagement,” VanCleave said. “By coming together to support initiatives like this, we not only enhance the beauty of our parks and green spaces but also strengthen the bonds that unite us as a community.”

In addition, VanCleave shared the he was proud to watch volunteers from Helena take active steps to preserving the environment of Alabama.

“As a council member, I am proud to see our community actively participating in projects that promote sustainability and preserve our natural heritage,” VanCleave said. “By working collaboratively to protect and enhance our green spaces, we are investing in a brighter future for Helena and ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty of Lee Springs Park.”
