Oak Mountain senior finishes sixth in Decathlon

Oak Mountain High School senior Rhett Laporte posted several top 10 finishes in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Decathlon championship meet May 17 at Hoover High School.

Laporte, who finished in the top 10 in seven of the 10 events in the Decathlon, finished sixth overall in the individual standings with 5,513 points in the meet.

The Decathlon tests an athlete’s ability in both track and field events.

Laporte’s highest finish came in the long jump competition, where he finished in a two-way tie for fifth overall with his leap of 6.08 meters.

Laporte finished ninth overall in the shot put event with his throw of 11.43 meters. He finished in a seven-way tie for seventh overall in the high jump competition with his leap of 1.75 meters. Laporte came in seventh overall in the 400-meter dash with his time of 52.91 seconds.

Laporte finished 10th overall in the discus throw event with his toss of 31.76 meters. He came in sixth overall with in the javelin throw competition with his throw of 44.85 meters. Laporte finished seventh overall in the 1,500 meter run with his time of 4:39.26.

Laporte’s teammate at Oak Mountain, Anders Allen, also competed in the Decathlon. Allen’s highest finish came in the discus throw competition, where he finished ninth overall with his toss of 31.80 meters.

Allen finished 54th overall in individual standings in the Decathlon with 3,874 points.
