Spain Park runner wins race at Southeast Showdown

Spain Park High School’s Madeline Held won the girls’ 5K large school race at the Southeast Showdown meet Oct. 8 at Veterans Park in Hoover.

Held edged second-place finisher Jordan Richmond of Holy Spirit by more than 30 seconds in the race.

Teammate Jessica Bilek finished third in the race with her time of 21:35.00. The combination helped the Jaguars finish third overall in team standings.

Marisa Gray of Spain Park finished 14th overall with her time of 23:01.30.

Oak Mountain came in 10th in the team standings. Heather Comensky led the Eagles as she finished 42nd in individual standings with her time of 24:19.16.

Brandon Hazouri of Spain Park led the boys’ cross country team in the all-american championship race with his time of 16:37.94, which placed him fourth overall in individual standings.

Spain Park finished fifth in the all-american championship team standings. The Jaguars’ Steven Crain finished 10th overall in individual standings with his time of 17:17.49.

Oak Mountain finished 13th in team standings in the all-american championship. Tanner Syx led the Eagles as he finished 40th overall in individual standings with his time of 18:09.64.
