FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Homewood High School Patriots used an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and went on to post a 52-37 victory over visiting Pelham on Dec. 1.

The Panthers (5-2) led for the entire second quarter and took a narrow 20-18 advantage into the locker room at halftime, but hit only 5-of-20 field goals after intermission.

The Patriots made it 32-26 on a Mike Lummis basket early in the quarter before Willie Simpson cut it to three points with a three-pointer at the 5:46 mark. But Homewood then went on its 11-0 run, holding the Panthers scoreless until 3:11 remained on the clock when Simpson drained another trey.

Homewood increased the margin to 18 points at 50-32 before Pelham’s Kenny Meadows scored his team’s last five points in the final minute of play.

The Patriots got 17-point performances from Mikhail Lamar and Nyck Young as Lamar scored 11 of his points in the opening half and Young registered all of his points after halftime following an 0-for-6 shooting first half.

Pelham was led by Meadows’ 13 points with Qadash Williams scoring 10.  The Panthers committed 18 turnovers in the game while the Patriots turned the ball over 14 times.

Pelham will be back in action next Thursday, Dec. 8 when the Panthers play host to John Carroll.
