Falcons win NCAA tournament opener

Barton College, which knocked down five of its first six shots in the second half, managed to cut the deficit to just six points, 53-47, with 15:14 remaining following a 3-pointer by Jaren Haley.

DeShazior stemmed the Barton College momentum with his 3-pointer at the 14:46 mark, which pushed the Falcons’ lead back to 56-47.

Rivera sparked the home crowd with a thunderous dunk moments later and Montevallo pushed its lead back to double digits following a layup by Davis, which gave the Falcons a 60-49 lead with 13:04 remaining in the game.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit to five points following a jump shot by Aaron Suggs with 8:08 remaining in the game. Rivera responded with a 3-pointer seconds later to give the Falcons a little breathing room heading down the stretch.

Brown knocked down a pair of timely 3-pointers on separate occasions in the final minutes in the second half to keep Barton College from turning the game into a one-possession game late in the second half.

Barton College again cut the deficit to five points, 81-76, with 4:15 remaining in the game before Davis capped a 5-0 run by Montevallo to give the Falcons a 86-76 lead with 2:34 left. The Falcons maintained the lead down the stretch by knocking down 8-of-12 free throws in the final minute.
