COLUMBIANA – The Cornerstone Chargers hosted the Kingwood Christian Lions in a matchup of two winless teams. The game was marred with multiple turnovers from both sides. The first half was the most competitive, as it was where both teams scored all of their respected points.

The Lions struck first midway through the first quarter when QB Mitchell Carter scored on a routine QB draw with 5:22 remaining. Kingwood converted the two-point conversion to take a 8-0 lead. However, the turnover flaw began to show for both clubs on their ensuing possessions.

The second quarter began promising for Cornerstone after Jeffrey Odgers hauled in a touchdown catch to pull the Chargers within two. Cornerstone’s two-point try came up short and they trailed 8-6 with under ten minutes to go until halftime.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Lions made a critical mistake as a penalty negated an impressive touchdown return. For the next six minutes both teams struggled to move the ball. Kingwood caught its second wind when Chase Inabiett added six more for the Lions to push the score to 14-6 with less than four minutes remaining before halftime. This completed the game’s scoring. Kingwood won 14-6.

Head Coach Tim Smith acknowledged his team’s greatest shortcoming post game. “You can’t put the ball on the ground seven times. You can’t have seven turnovers and beat anybody and that’s what we did. We shot ourselves in the foot all night long.”
